Etsy production partners, explained for sellers who outsource

Updated October 27, 2026

Etsy allows sellers to work with others to make their items, but expects the seller to be open about it. Etsy’s rules call the people or companies that help you physically produce your items “production partners”. This page is a plain-language overview based on public seller guides. It is not legal advice, and Etsy’s own policy is the source of truth.

The short version

  • Etsy’s Creativity Standards describe items as made, designed, sourced or handpicked by the seller. Which one applies depends on who did what.
  • If another person or business helps produce your items, you generally need to add them as a production partner in your Shop Manager settings.
  • When you create or edit a listing, you then set who made it. If no partner is set up, listings default to “made by seller”.
  • Seller guides say you must say what role the partner plays, and that partners must follow applicable laws.

What to check in Etsy’s own policy

Rules change. Before you outsource, read Etsy’s current Creativity Standards and its production partner help pages in the Etsy Help Center, and confirm how they apply to your products and your shop.

Using a maker through Makers2Makers

If a maker on Makers2Makers produces items for your Etsy shop, those makers are production partners as far as Etsy’s rules are concerned. Makers2Makers does not set up your Etsy disclosures for you; that is done in your own Etsy shop settings. Keep the maker’s details handy when you do.

  • Message the maker on the order to confirm their business name and what they do.
  • Update your listings so they describe who makes the item and how.
  • Keep a record of the maker you use for each product.

What it costs

Joining is free for sellers and makers, and there is no subscription. When an order is routed to a maker, the seller pays 5% + $0.30 on top of the maker’s price and the maker pays 5% + $0.30 from their payout. Nothing is charged until an order is made. Sellers pay for the shipping label.

Common questions

Can I use a maker if I sell on Etsy?

Etsy allows production partners, with disclosure. Check Etsy’s current policy and set up your partners in Shop Manager before you list items made by someone else.

Does Makers2Makers handle the Etsy disclosure?

No. The disclosure is done in your Etsy shop settings. Makers2Makers handles routing the order, the files and messages, shipping labels and payouts.
