US-based print on demand: what “made in the USA” actually means
Sellers often search for US-based print on demand because they want faster shipping or want to say a product is made in the USA. Those are two different things. This page explains the difference and what to ask before you put a claim in a listing.
US-based is not the same as Made in USA
A supplier can be located in the United States and still use imported blanks, materials or parts. Where the product ships from tells you about shipping speed. It does not on its own tell you where the product was made.
What to ask a supplier before you make a claim
- Where is the blank product itself made?
- Where does the decoration step (printing, engraving, embroidery) happen?
- Can they give you documentation for the claim you want to make?
- What are the typical production and shipping times to your customers?
Why makers are a different answer
When an independent maker produces your order, you can ask them directly where they make it and what materials they use. On Makers2Makers a maker’s ship-from address is on file before a seller can assign orders to them, and sellers can message the maker on the order.
How handing an order to a maker works on Makers2Makers
- Connect your store once (Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Square, eBay, Amazon, TikTok Shop, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Walmart or Magento). Orders come in on their own.
- Assign an order to a maker you already know, or open it to bids and compare price, shipping and past ratings.
- Files and personalization details travel with the order, and you can approve a file before production starts.
- The maker makes it and ships it. You buy the shipping label in the app at live carrier rates.
- Makers are paid every Friday once the carrier has scanned the package.
What it costs
Joining is free for sellers and makers, and there is no subscription. When an order is routed to a maker, the seller pays 5% + $0.30 on top of the maker’s price and the maker pays 5% + $0.30 from their payout. Nothing is charged until an order is made. Sellers pay for the shipping label.
Common questions
Does Makers2Makers guarantee Made in USA?
No. Makers choose the products they offer and where they make them. If you plan to make that claim, confirm it with the maker and keep the documentation.
Joining is free, with no subscription and no minimum. You pay 5% + $0.30 per order, and so does the maker.
